Highflyers “Once Were Worriers” Conquer the Kokoda Trail

An extraordinary group of nineteen individuals, aptly named “Once Were Worriers,” recently undertook the challenging Kokoda Trail to mark Australian sporting legend Ron Barassi’s milestone seventh decade.

This diverse team included corporate heavyweights, sporting icons, former footballers, and a decorated soldier, all united by determination and camaraderie.

Among the trekkers were merchant banker John Wylie, Toll Holdings CEO Paul Little, and former Just Jeans owner Craig Kimberley. Political figures included MHR Simon Crean and Victorian ALP Minister Steve Crabb, while yachtsman John Bertrand, businessman Max Forster, and Colonel Rick Burr represented leadership in their respective fields.

Sporting greats also joined the trek, including AFL legends Robert DiPierdomenico, Garry Baker, and David Shaw, as well as AFL representatives Andrew Cadzow and Justin Karcher from Brisbane and PNG.

Completing the group were Qantas pilot Jack Peters, Cbus CEO Sandy Grant, sports equipment manager Peter Gadd, and Paul Doran who exemplified resilience and teamwork on the demanding journey.

The Kokoda Trail, a symbolic journey of endurance and historical significance, proved the perfect backdrop for this accomplished team to honour Barassi’s incredible legacy while embracing the spirit of challenge and reflection.
